Building Information Modelling (BIM) Fundamentals
Course Description
BIM (Building Information Modeling) is becoming a crucial and even mandated process to ensure the planning, design, and construction of buildings is highly efficient and collaborative. BIM is an acronym for Building Information Modeling. It is a highly collaborative process that allows multiple stakeholders and AEC (architecture, engineering, construction) professionals to collaborate on the planning, design, and construction of a building within one 3D model. It can also span into the operation and management of buildings using data that owners have access to. This data allows owners and stakeholders to make decisions based on pertinent information derived from the model— even after the building is constructed. Building Information Modelling (BIM) in Design, Construction and Operations is fast becoming the industry standard approach to designing, analysing, and managing building lifecycle. On this course you will learn a holistic approach to everything from design and construction to maintenance, operation, and sustainability from industry and research experts using state-of-the-art BIM software. You will also benefit from regular talks from BIM experts and close links to the industry. Building Information Modelling (BIM) Fundamentals Training Course will provide you with an understanding of why ‘Collaborative BIM’ has been adopted as a Government requirement and how Building Information Modelling (BIM) supports Lean principles to reduce waste in construction and asset management. This course will provide an overview of the standards that define BIM implementation and the fundamental processes of a Common Data Environment (CDE).

Training Objective

At the end of the Building Information Modelling (BIM) Fundamentals Training Course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the business case for BIM in any project, taking into account benefits, examining the drivers, functionality and characteristics of a good BIM model
  • How to create an EIR and BIM execution plan including the process, content, production and evaluation
  • Develop a global perspective of what BIM is
  • Reflect on the future of BIM
  • Summarise an overview of the BIM maturity system
  • Apply the processes and standards applicable to the management of information about an asset throughout its lifespan
  • Identify who and how to engage with the right stakeholders at each stage of the project lifecycle
  • Evaluate the historical issues within the construction industry which is driving BIM adoption
  • Discuss the requirements for change within the AEC industry
  • Debate the findings relating to key industry case studies
  • Explore the global drivers which have led to BIM adoption
  • Demonstrate the ability to use the standards that support ‘UK BIM implementation’

Target Audience

Building Information Modelling (BIM) Fundamentals Training Course is suitable for:

Construction professionals who want to learn more about BIM. It will appeal to learners who have come from academic and professional backgrounds in construction management, architectural technology, building surveying, quantity surveying, civil engineering and building services. Anyone adopting BIM implementation into their organization, their own work practices, or helping their clients or supply chains to adopt it. Construction and asset management professionals (project managers, asset managers, designers, constructors, manufacturers, maintenance contractors, information managers)

Training Methods

Daily Agenda

Day 1

Introduction to BIM

  •  Identify the business case for BIM in any project, taking into account benefits, examining the drivers, functionality and characteristics of a good BIM model

Strategy for BIM – Start with the end in mind

  •  Understand BIM Uses and the requirement for a strategy for BIM
  • Understand the Organisational Information Requirements
  • Understand the Asset Information Requirements and Asset Information Model
  • Produce a high-level BIM briefing paper to your organisation

Day 2

BIM in Design Co-ordination

  •  Develop an advanced understanding of BIM approaches for retrieving, analysing and integrating information to aid decision-making, and using appropriate BIM tools.

 BIM in Construction Operation

  • Looks at a range of BIM approaches and applications for construction planning and operations, including simulating construction schedules and logistics, build ability forecasting and clash detection.

Day 3

BIM in Business and Practice

  • The opportunity to pursue a case study closely related to a company's interests, and how they use BIM approaches and protocols. You will help the company with a BIM organisational strategic and implementation plan to ensure it's aligned with their business strategy.

BIM in Operation and Maintenance

  •  Examine the role of BIM for building and asset operation and maintenance, and the challenges of BIM-Facilities Management (FM) integration.

Day 4

Low/Zero-Impact Buildings

  •  Assesses the role of BIM in designing and operating comfortable buildings that significantly reduce or eliminate energy use. You will evaluate low or zero-carbon and renewable technologies, apply BIM to evaluate buildings' environmental performance and explore the impact of Part L, BREEAM, LEED and EPC ratings.

Construction Project Management Practice

  •  Here you will integrate your project manager skills by selecting a project case study and analysing it in relation to environment, client objectives, feasibility, strategy, implementation, and commissioning.

Day 5

Construction Contract Law

  •  Examines the allocation of risk in the context of the conditions of standard contracts, and assesses the roles of legal documents, including letters of intent and collateral warranties.

 Dissertation

  •  To equip and guide you to undertake independent research on issues and topics relevant to construction and the built environment.
Accreditation

RECTUS attendance certificate will be issued to all attendees completing minimum of 80% of the total course duration
