Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive understanding of how automation technologies are applied in modern electrical distribution substations to enhance reliability, safety, and operational efficiency. Participants will learn how Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), communication networks, SCADA, and protection systems are integrated to enable real-time monitoring, control, and fault management in distribution networks.

  • Human–Machine Interface (HMI)
  • Data acquisition, alarms, and event recording

Day 3 – Communication and Standards

  • Substation communication networks
  • Ethernet, fiber optics, and redundancy concepts
  • Overview of IEC 61850
  • GOOSE and MMS messaging principles
  • Cybersecurity fundamentals for substations

 

Day 4 – Protection, Control, and SCADA Integration

  • Protection relays within automation systems
  • Control, interlocking, and switching schemes
  • Fault detection and isolation concepts
  • SCADA integration and remote operation
  • Distribution automation functions (FDIR, load management)

Day 5 – Operation, Maintenance, and Future Trends

  • Testing and commissioning concepts for automation systems
